Johannesburg, 9 July 2012: Twitter and other social media sites have been ablaze with news of “The Comedy Central Roast of Steve Hofmeyr” (#RoastZA), the upcoming African Roast from comedy channel Comedy Central (DStv Channel 122).

From the minute Steve Hofmeyr (@Steve_Hofmeyr) tweeted about his involvement in the programme on 3 July, comedy lovers, media pundits and Hofmeyr fans and detractors alike were buzzing with news about the Roast.  Following the announcement, @ComedyCentralAF, the official Twitter site for Comedy Central in Africa, saw its biggest ever spike in new Twitter followers, while “Steve Hofmeyr” trended for large parts of the day.  At the same time, the Facebook site for Comedy Central, www.facebook.com/comedycentralafrica, increased its existing reach by 600 percent as users clamoured for news about the Roast.

Among the key topics being discussed in the twitterverse was the identities of the celebrity Roastmaster and Roasters who will be invited to heap scorn and ridicule on Roastee Steve Hofmeyr.  Among the names suggested by the eager Tweeters were Barry Hilton (@barry_hilton), Chris Forrest (@ChrisForrestSA), Loyiso Gola (@loyisogola), Trevor Noah (@Trevornoah), Deep Fried Man (@DeepFriedMan), Khani Mbau, Tumi Morake (@tumi_morake), John Vlismas (@fortyshort), Nik Rabinovitz, Mark Banks, ventriloquist Martin Evans (@hellpants), Trevor Gumbi (@trevorgumbi), DJ Fresh (@DJFreshSA), Kuli Roberts (@kuliroberts), Kobus Galloway (@IdeesVolVrees), Casper de Vries (@casperrasper) and ex-Springbok coach Peter de Villiers! Many Tweeters had suggestions for future South African Roastees they’d like to see in the Roast hotseat including Julius Malema and Nelson Mandela.

Within minutes of the announcement, the switchboards at Comedy Central and the Lyric Theatre were red hot with queries from comedy fans wanting to buy tickets for the Roast, which takes place at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City Casino, Johannesburg on 11 September.  A limited number of tickets for the exclusive live event are expected to go on sale via Computicket on 23 July.

Despite all the chatter, and endless unconfirmed speculation, Comedy Central is sticking to its guns and refusing to reveal the names of any further participants until 23 July.
