“The Comedy Central Roast of Kenny Kunene Fired up by Nando’s”, an innovative live comedy event and TV show created by Comedy Central Africa, takes place at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City, Johannesburg, on 3 April 2014. The show, in which Carr and a panel of Roastees will toast “Sushi King” Kenny Kunene, premieres on Comedy Central (DStv Channel 122) across sub-Saharan Africa on Monday 28 April at 21:00 CAT.
Hilarious comic genius Carr follows in the footsteps of last year’s “Roastmaster” Trevor Noah, who famously presided over the inaugural African Roast, “The Comedy Central Roast of Steve Hofmeyr”, in 2012.
British funnyman Carr is hugely popular in South Africa, having toured the country regularly since 2011; his latest, sold-out stand-up tour, Comedy Central Presents Jimmy Carr: Gagging Order is scheduled to begin in South Africa on 29 March. Included among Jimmy’s many achievements and accolades to date are a British Comedy Award for Best Live Stand Up Tour, a Loaded LAFTA Award for Best Stand-Up and a Perrier Award nomination for Best Show. In 2013, Jimmy’s career continued to go from strength to strength, as he hosted “10 O’Clock Live”, fronted two new series of “8 Out Of 10 Cats” and recorded his eighth live stand-up DVD, “Laughing and Joking” - all while preparing for his current smash-hit world tour. Jimmy has eight live DVD releases to his name including “Live”, “Stand Up”, “Comedian”, “In Concert”, “Telling Jokes”, “Making People Laugh” and “Being Funny”, and has sold over 1.2 million copies to date. Often referred to as “the hardest working man in comedy”, Jimmy has so far performed his stand-up tour shows to over 1.5 million people in the UK. A household name in the UK, Jimmy is also a rising star in the US, where his profile continues to grow. Jimmy has performed two Comedy Central Specials and in May 2011 appeared on NBC’s “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” – his fifth appearance to date. He has also appeared four times on NBC’s flagship programme “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and in March 2012, he performed in “The Secret Policeman’s Ball” at Radio City Hall in New York, which was transmitted live in the US on EPIX. Jimmy also performed at the Montreal “Just for Laughs” comedy festival for the ninth time in July 2013.
Jimmy’s role as Roastmaster will be to introduce the Roastee and Roasters and to keep the comic mayhem in check throughout the Roast event as Kunene is hauled over the coals by a panel of peers, friends, enemies, critics, comics and entertainment personalities, using a humorous barrage of praise, criticism, abuse, jokes and downright lies.
Commented Roastee Kenny Kunene, “Hats off to Comedy Central for making this an event with international appeal…because I'm in it! Who's this Jimmy Carr guy, anyway?"
Commented Evert van der Veer, Head of Comedy Central, Africa, “We are very excited to have Jimmy Carr signed up to host “The Comedy Central Roast of Kenny Kunene”. Jimmy will be a brilliant Roastmaster, and we look forward to seeing how he applies his particular brand of twisted comedy magic to the Roast franchise.”
Said Lindani Mnyandu, Nando’s General Manager, Marketing Communications, “Jimmy already has a long relationship with Nando's in the UK, tweeting when he visits our Southend branch. We look forward to introducing him to some of our awesome South African restaurants."
A limited number of tickets for “The Comedy Central Roast of Kenny Kunene Fired up by Nando’s” go on sale at Computicket and the Lyric Theatre Box Office from 21 February priced R 700.
